What We Do

GBC Uganda promotes initiatives that improve performance, health and quality of buildings, cities and the communities we live and work in. We support innovation , conduct research, help promote and improve policy, laws and regulations that shape the property, real estate and building sector to foster the development of better, greener, cleaner, healthier, more resilient, and socially and environmentally sustainable "green" buildings and cities in Uganda.

Our Approach

GBC Uganda has adopted a four-pronged approach to delivering its service and message.

Education

Strengthen the building sector by providing innovative services and  support through capacity building, regular information exchange and access to green building design best practice, technology and latest trends and innovations from local and international thought leaders. Scheduled activities will include:: Training workshops, conferences, Green Star* Accredited Professional Courses in New Buildings, Existing Building Performance and Project Certification workshops. On a wider community level it is envisaged to run targeted outreach and communication to schools and educators to enhance understanding and at an early stage embed the message of environmental impact of the built environment and need to reduce it.

Advocacy

Advocate for more socially and environmentally responsible and sustainable practice facilitated by enabling a policy environment with appropriate legislation, regulation, and supervision. The building sector would be strengthened by ensuring an appropriate legal and regulatory structure for the delivery of green building services. This we expect to achieve by creating or contributing to: awareness-raising, educating people and communities about the benefits of green building; Support Government  to lead by example, to legislate and facilitate the adoption of green building services; Recognise and reward industry leaders, excellence, innovation.

Certification

GBC Uganda seeks to promote initiatives that improve performance, health and quality of buildings, cities and the communities we live and work in. To that end, we aim to support innovation , conduct research, help promote and improve policy, laws and regulations that shape the property, real estate and building sector in Uganda to foster development of better, greener, cleaner and healthier, more resilient socially and environmentally sustainable "green" buildings and cities in Uganda.

GBCU is mandated to advise, educate and collaborate with stakeholders , provide rating and certification of projects; and training of professionals in Green Building best practices encompassing climate actions, health and wellbeing; resources and availability as focus areas.

Collaboration

Our program will actively seek out and 11etwork with institutions and professionals to encourage and enable collaboration for knowledge exchange and capacity building. We believe that long-term sustainable community development is going to require the active engagement of more than just the built environment professional. According to Arch.

Robert Kiggundu President of Uganda Society of Architects: "A wide range of occupations -from planners, architects and surveyo1·s, to staff from central, regional and local government, to retailers, educators, and police officers will have an essential role to play in making communities attractive, safe places to live." To that end we encourage collaboration within the sector and between them, to increase awa1·eness, exchange knowledge, and to enable the accelerated adoption of green building best practice.
